So you’ve pressed the power button and all you get<\/span><\/h2>\n

is\u00a0a screen like one of these, or worse still,<\/span><\/h2>\n

no response at all!<\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

Your computer won’t start, and it’s not in the mood to be helpful either.<\/span><\/h2>\n

What’s the next step (after you’ve tried 10 Hail Marys and kicking the cat)?<\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

(Tips! \u00a0Here are a few things you can try for yourself):<\/span><\/p>\n

If there are no lights showing and no noise from the computer’s fan:<\/span> <\/span><\/h2>\n

Check for power. Your machine might have been <\/span>unplugged (it happens), <\/span>or the switch next to<\/span><\/p>\n

the plug might be turned off.\u00a0 Make <\/span>sure that the power cable at the back of <\/span>your PC’s case <\/span><\/p>\n

hasn’t come loose. If it’s a laptop, check <\/span>that all the power adaptor connections are secure.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You could also test it in another power socket or <\/span><\/span>t<\/span>ry plugging something else, like a lamp<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

or a kettle, into the same socket <\/span>on the wall.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

If that doesn’t work, as we say in Wexford, you may call an electrician!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

However, if the machine is clearly getting power and you see one of the <\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

so-called “screens of death” shown above:<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Try rebooting it by hitting the power button to switch it off, then after waiting about 30 seconds,<\/span><\/p>\n

power it on again and it might just right itself.\u00a0 If pressing the power button doesn’t turn it off, <\/span>try holding<\/span><\/p>\n

down <\/span>the button for about 10 seconds until the screen goes black and there’s\u00a0<\/span>no more<\/span><\/p>\n

lights or sound; then power <\/span>it on again as above and cross your fingers!<\/span><\/p>\n
